Twin Lakes Hytte

Single family residence in Twin Lakes, CO.

Perched atop a rocky mountain ridge overlooking Twin Lakes, Colorado, this Norwegian-inspired mountain cabin is designed to enhance the best aspects of indoor and outdoor mountain life. The home sits at 9,600 feet, where expansive views, intense sun, and a compact building footprint informed every design decision.

In response to the steep and challenging site, the cabin is organized as an efficient, carefully scaled composition of simple rectangular volumes. These volumes are joined at circulation paths to create a clear separation between public and private spaces, while also forming a series of protected outdoor rooms that extend daily living into the landscape. Generous south-facing windows flood the main living space with natural light and capture critical solar gains at high altitude. The glazing wraps to the west, where a covered outdoor living room frames sweeping views of Twin Lakes and Mount Elbert.

The building orientation and roof forms work together to support both active and passive solar strategies. Asymmetrical, vaulted roof volumes maximize solar exposure while maintaining a restrained, humble presence on the ridge. A covered entry, oriented toward the road and parking below, establishes a clear and sheltered arrival and serves as the home’s central circulation point.

Two children's bedrooms branch off the entry, offering privacy and distinct relationships to the site. One bedroom opens to dramatic southern views, while the other faces north toward Mount Massive. The primary bedroom suite is tucked along a private hall to the north, capturing quieter views to the west and north. Despite the extensive glazing, the home’s elevated position at the top of the knoll provides a strong sense of privacy.
