“In short, no pattern is an isolated entity. Each pattern can exist in the world, only to the extent that is supported by other patterns: the larger patterns in which it is embedded, the patterns of the same size that surround it, and the smaller patterns which are embedded in it.”
- Christopher Alexander
This single-family residence in Paonia, CO, is a harmonious blend of thoughtful design and sustainable living, inspired by the principles in the book "A Pattern Language" by Christopher Alexander. Shape Architecture Studio collaborated with the owners to create a home that is not only beautiful but responds to both the site and the needs of its inhabitants.
The "Long Thin House" design concept was chosen to clearly delineate public and private areas, with an inviting central entry threshold that serves as the home's axis point between the two. The south-facing facade, with its large windows, not only provides breathtaking views of Mount Gunnison and the surrounding national forests but also maximizes solar gain, contributing to the home's passive elements.
In partnership with Collective Carpentry Building System, the residence is being constructed with a super-insulated, prefabricated structure that ensures exceptional energy efficiency and thermal comfort. The use of an arctic heat pump, radiant heating, adjustable cooling further enhances the home's sustainability focus, providing a comfortable, environmentally friendly living environment that will endure for years to come.
