The restoration of The Famous breathes new life into one of Leadville’s most storied addresses. Originally built in the late 1800s and home to The Famous Shoe Company—a branch of the historic Famous-Barr department store—the building’s revival reconnects downtown Leadville to its past while shaping its future.

The design preserves and rehabilitates the original brick façades and 1800s storefront. Salvaged materials were integrated throughout the design, such as the original wood floors (repurposed as the restaurant’s ceiling). These historic elements are juxtaposed with contemporary elements, including a long-span steel structure, modern kitchen, and accessible dining and meeting spaces that open onto a three-season patio framing mountain views. Guided by the ethos of a “communal living room,” the restaurant fosters connection and flexibility for events, meetings, and daily life. Additionally, eight residences on the second-floor provide much-needed homes for local workers, with all eight units being occupied within weeks of the building opening.

A collaborative effort between owner, design team, and local craftsmen, the project celebrates Leadville’s resilience and craft heritage, revitalizing a cornerstone of Main Street as both a social anchor and a symbol of community renewal.
