Zenobia Alley House

This accessory dwelling unit (ADU) was designed for a young couple who lived in the primary home at the front of the lot. They took on the challenge of both building the project themselves and completing the interior design. Their hands-on approach and craftsmanship are evident throughout, resulting in an exceptionally well-executed structure with impressive airtightness, thoughtful detailing, and a warm, personal character.

Interior of Zenobia Alley House

The design began with a simple observation: the low structures lining the alley created the potential for excellent light at the second floor. To make the most of this, the main living spaces, including the kitchen and primary living space, are located on the second floor to take full advantage of the abundant daylight and open views. Large, simple windows on both sides capture morning and evening light, creating a bright, uplifting environment for daily living. A scissor-truss roof provides a cost-effective way to achieve high ceilings and a spacious, airy feel.

The ground level is organized around two cozy bedrooms along with a well-appointed ¾ bath. A compact porch marks the gated entry from the alley, offering a welcoming transition into the home. Beneath the main floor, a crawlspace provides additional storage.

An extra-long garage sits beside the ADU, sized to accommodate both a workshop and an extended-cab pickup. A secondary pedestrian door faces the main house, allowing convenient access for the owners. The building’s form offers a modern, simplified interpretation of the neighborhood’s classic silhouettes, with clean lines, large windows, no overhangs, and a restrained material palette.

The exterior takes a modern approach to a familiar neighborhood form: clean lines, large simple windows, and no overhangs. With all-electric systems, including an ERV and a mini-split heating, the ADU is efficient, comfortable, and built to last.
